"Wear & Tear"
In an attempt to keep Tolly owners informed of issues that may
affect Tolly owners we will address such information on this page. The
following are areas of concern that Tolly owners should be aware of.
If you have any questions please contact us at the numbers/addresses listed at
the bottom of this page.

Poor Engine Performance -
If your Tollycraft is having poor engine performance
it might be a good idea to check out the following:
From as early as 1970 and as late as 1986, the fuel
pick up tube had a small screen at the end . (See photo #1) It
is possible for this screen to become plugged with contaminates in the
fuel and cause poor engine performance or even shut down the engine.

We have heard of some cases where a motor is running
well and suddenly looses power and in some cases stops only to be
restarted an hour or so later and run fine. This could be caused by
the contaminates being washed away from the screen by the motion of the
fuel in the tank. It is possible a competent mechanic could misread
the engine symptoms as a bad carburetor, bad spark plugs or even bad fuel.
To alleviate the problem simply remove the
screen. (See photo #2) Most Tollys do not have a provision for
removing the fuel pick up tube. If you suspect this could be a
problem with your vessel, we suggest you take it to a competent repair
yard or marine mechanic.

Cat 3208 TA Marine Engine -
New aftercooler housings are being used in
production on 3208TZ Marine Engines rated 375 HP & 435 HP. Both
housings incorporate a boost sensitive drain valve in the bottom of the
housing that allows condensate to drain. The valve is normally
opens, but closes when reaches 2-3 PSI. The condensate drain was
added to the turbo charged aftercooled engines to eliminate the
possibility of condensate entering stopped engines. This may be a
problem, especially in cold water climates.
Adaptable to: First
production of the TA engines. The new 109-6857 Aftercooler Housing
for the 435 HP engine, was effective in production with engine S/N
01Z27027. The new 109-7278 Aftercooler Housings for the 375 HP
engine was effective in production with engine S/N 01Z27337.
Both housings use the same 108-1478 Drain Valve
Group. A 5P-0767 Hose (bulk), clamped to the drain valve with one
5D-1026 Hose Clamp, is used to route the condensate to the bilge of the
boat. The amount of condensate is minimal (about one cup drainage
overnight, maximum).

Cat 3208 N Series Engines
- Check your oil hoses that run from the back
of the Cat Engine to the oil cooler for abrasion. It has been
reported by an owner of a 1979 40' Tolly with 3208 N Cats that upon
inspection, he found the stainless wire covering had completely worn off
exposing the plastic inner hose. If this oil hose were to rupture,
it could cause very serious or fatal engine damage.

Black Vinyl Rub Rail
- To restore
the color of your black vinyl rub rail use Methyl-Ethyl-Ketone.
Please note the safety procedures on label.

|
| Steering Clevis
- As you can see in the photograph on the right, the
steering clevis has worn an elliptical hole. It is possible this
could simply make steering hunt. If left unattended, a complete loss
of steering could occur, over an extended period of time. Steering
clevis assemblies are in stock at Resources International for $29.95 plus
shipping & handling. |

Cadet Heaters
- For many years Tollycraft installed electric heaters
manufactured by the Cadet Company. On January 15, 1999 the Consumer
Product Safety Commission (CPSC) released a complaint filed against Cadet to force the
company to recall 1.8 million heaters. Cadet strongly disagrees with
the CPSC's position and is fully prepared to defend its product in court.
Cadet is attempting to locate customers who purchased Z-152 & Z-202 models
produced prior to December 1998. They suspect an out-sourced element
may be faulty and are requesting affected customers to contact them for
updated information. Cadet Customer Service can be reached at
1-800-567-2613 or you can check out their website at www.cadetco.com. |
