New Style 26' Tollycraft Rudder

The rudder on the right (in the photo on the left) is the rudder supplied by Tollycraft Corporation in Kelso, Washington for nearly 850 inboard 26' V-Drive Tollys.  This rudder has approximately 144 sq. in. of surface area.  the small size of the rudder makes it difficult to steer the 26' Tolly at low rpm's because of the limited surface area and the inability to capture significant thrust from the propeller.

The rudder on the left in the photo is a replacement rudder for the 26" Tollycraft.  The new style rudder is nearly 245 sq. in. of surface area or an increase of approximately 70%.  This new rudder will greatly improve the steering at low speeds primarily because it captures 100% of the propeller thrust.

"I have the new rudder installed, it went quite easily.  I have not had the boat out too much since, but it has helped the low speed control by quite a bit!  I most notice the difference when I'm coasting in the marina towards my slip, I coast in neutral with the odd burst of forward to maintain momentum, and with the old small rudder the boat would immediately start to wander and not track straight when in neutral, but with the new rudder it tracks wonderfully!  This is very nice for me as I have a fairly long distance to my slip in the marina.  I have not done much reversing yet but I will let you know on that, I will take it out in the small bay one day and try a few maneuvers to test it out.  But so far, I am VERY pleased with the performance of the new rudder and am very happy I did it!                                                              - J.Z.
